Favours for Sailors

So if you are a fan of The Shins or Modest Mouse or Vampire Weekend you will enjoy this band (insert crazy adverb here, such as majestically.) They are a very underground indie pop/alt rock band. They released their first and only EP, Furious Sons, in March 2009.

Their music style is very similar to The Shins, but the vocals are closer to Modest Mouse. Also they appeal to those who love to be the first to find a band and they like them until they are popular, you know who you are! If that is you Favours for Sailors will appeal to you even more! If popularity doesn't matter to you though, this band will appeal to you even more! How you might ask, I don't know I might answer.

Either way, you will like this band even more than everyone else, no matter who you are so check them out!

(Their lyrics can be found quite humorous at some times)

Songs I Recommend:
Erode My Empire
No Room at The Buffet
The Nihilist Prays (MY personal favorite)
I Dreamt That You Dreamt That You Loved Me In Your Dreams (clever song title)
Shy Times (This one and Our Name are good too)
Our Name

The rest you have to preview on iTunes if you want to hear them, that is if you don't want to download them.

NPorder

Ok so you may have read our post on the band New Politics, it has been our most popular post to date, mainly due to the point that the band helped spread the word over twitter and facebook. It was really cool. Anyway like I said in that post, "They are lighting up the music scene and will be huge." That is exactly true. By involving their fans they are spreading by near 1000 fans on facebook a day!

The real crazy and smart thing this band is doing is that they interact with fans. So the fans have done one of the smartest, and craziest things I have ever seen anyone do with social networking sites. They have created a hashtag labeled #NPOrder. What #NPOrder is, is a fan from each state created an NPOrder for the state and named it NPOrderStateName. That way fans can connect with the band in just a state's proximity and receive news about the New Politics relating to just their state! It's genius!

I highly recommend that if you are a fan of theirs, or if you just liked their music and you have a twitter to find the #NPorder of your state and follow it.

And like I said in my original post on the New Politics, "They are lighting up the music scene and will be huge. This band is doing EVERYTHING right and I recommend getting on their bandwagon now before it's too late and you look foolish."

Everest

Ok so before I begin I just want to let you know that there are multiple bands with this name, a rock band, an alternative band, and a rapper. I will be discussing the middle, the alternative band... a great alternative, new, up and coming band.

Ok so this band will be big, I promise. They have already had songs appear on television shows and have performed their new single, "Let Go," on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Speaking of "Let Go," that song will be a summer classic, it's fun, catchy, and just a summer song!

With their second album, On Approach, they were able to get past the sophomore slump most bands go through. With appealing hits on both their first album and their second they have made a name for themselves and will show to the world that they are for real. They will soon be on the radio if not already... I wouldn't know because I don't listen to the radio. They have a Wilco sound to them, and that is without a doubt always a compliment.

Well I have said about as much as I can in words about this band now it is time for the most important part of this post, the recommendation of songs so you can see for yourself how good this band really is.

Songs I Recommend:
Let Go
Rebels In The Roses
Tall Buildings (has a John Lennon/Pink Floyd feel to it)
I've Had This Feeling Before
House of 9s (Has a Black Keys feel)
Catalyst

Ben Kweller

Ben Kweller... where to begin. Some of you may already know who the fellow is but for those who don't you are about to be introduced to one of your new favorite artists.

Kweller has produced songs with sounds of rock 'n' roll, some songs that feature him and just a piano, and some are just him and his guitar. It doesn't matter which feeling the song has though, because they are all equally great.

He is a musical guru and started at a very young age. I want you to close your eyes, picture what you were doing at age 15. Before you could drive, life was simpler and your only worry was the current dram in your freshman year of highschool. Kweller's lifestyle at age 15 consisted of touring the world as the front man of the pop-grunge band Radish.

Kweller has moved on from that band and for a while has been producing his solo stuff. Now you can definitely hear some of his biggest inspiration in him, the beatles, in his music. They play a huge role in his music writing. In fact, the chords of his first dozen songs used the same chords (in different patterns) from Beatles' songs.

I apologize if this review wasn't very helpful in giving you much insight on Kweller's music, but it is hard to put in words because it is very original and each song is a little different. I guess the main thing you should take from this is listen to him. I Promise YOU will LOVE Ben Kweller.

Songs I Recommend:
-The Rules (more rock 'n' roll and has a blues vibe to it)
-Run (This will be the one that hooks you on him)
-Falling (another favorite kinda Ben Folds in this one)
-Sundress (you will hear some Beatles in this one)
-Penny On A Traintrack
-Wasted and Ready (kinda has a Weezer feel to it)

As you can tell from just reading my quick descriptions his songs are very diferent from eachother but I guarantee you will love all of them.

Bad Books

Bad Books, like at least one kid in any family, was not planned and became the perfect mistake. Kevin Devine and Andy Hull from Manchester Orchestra created this band as a time killer on the road never expecting the band to actually create an album. Boy were they wrong, and thank God they were!

Their music styles are very different so you will be able to tell immediately who created what. Andy Hull's songs are the faster ones, while Kevin Devine's are slower. The beauty of this is that this album appeals to multiple people with different music preferences. If you like some faster Alt. Rock You will like half of the songs, if you like slower, more mellow vibe in your music you will like half of the songs, or if you are like me and like both you will LOVE all of them.

They are a very recent band only coming out of the workshop less than a year ago so if you are reading this you are going to be given the opportunity to catch on to them at a good time before radio stations overplay their great songs. So I highly recommend buying their debut self-titled album Bad Books.

In the section where I go and recommend songs for people to listen to in order to give you a brief idea of what the band sounds like I will separate the songs in two categories, 1 being Kevin Devines the other being Hulls.

Songs I Recommend:

Slower/ Mellow
-How This All Ends
-The Easy Mark & The Old Maid
-You're A Mirror I Cannot Avoid
-I Begged You Everything
-Mesa, AZ
-Texas

Faster/ Alt. Rock
-Baby Shoes
-Holding Down The Laughter
-You Wouldn't Have To Ask (I WISH the was longer)
-Please Move

Pete Yorn

Some of you may recognize this name, some may recognize his solo stuff, some may recognize him because of his work with Scarlett Johansson. If you do you are fortunate because Pete Yorn hasd created some great music. If you didn't know some of the songs I will list and talk about, than this post did its job.

Pete Yorn's solo stuff is great and I personally favor it over his work with Scarlett. He is an acoustic songwriter that falls under the alternative rock category. He has a great voice and the funny thing is he started off as a drummer.

He has had some songs on some TV shows and a couple movies, so you may recognize some of his songs.

His work with Scarlett was good, had a little more country vibe to it. Who would have guessed Scarlett would have had such a good voice? Is there anything she can't do? Plus she is gorgeous, And she is single now!

... I can dream.

Songs to listen to:
Strange Condition
Life on a Chain
For Us
For Nancy
Murray
Ice Age (unknown but one of my favorites)
Ever Fallen in Love
Lose You

With Scarlett:
Relator
Wear and Tear
Search Your Heart
I Don't Know What to Do

Civil Twilight

Looking for a newer band that is similar to U2's early days? Civil Twilight fits perfectly. With a lead singer who's voice can be mistaken for Bono's and the brilliance of both alt and Indie style music, there is nothing to dislike about this band.

Letters from the Sky is by far the most known song from there self-titled album released independently in 2008 and re-released just over a year and a half ago ago. You may recognize Letters from the Sky as the iTunes single of the week in October of 2009. Also, from the tv shows Harper's Island, One Tree Hill, and a few others. The 2nd most known song is Human featured in both Without a Trace and House. These two songs in specific have been gaining them rapid and much deserved popularity in the last year. However they are not all this band has to offer. The remaining songs on the album are not as well known, but have genius written all over them. I personally look forward to what Civil Twilight will be following this album up with in the future.

Top Recommended Songs:
Letters from the Sky
Human
Next to Me
Stolen
Run Dry

The Ruse

So honestly, this I have never put this band on this blog because I never thought I would need to, unfortunately I was wrong and this band never hit it off and for that I apologize. This band plays alternative rock, and their music just sets a mood. You can just picture yourself at a concert where this band is performing and it isn't small. It's a huge stadium full of people, lights, lighters waving in the air, and beautiful music. This band is THAT good.

My personal favorite album of theirs is Midnight in the City, though their most recent is Love Sex Confusion. Neither albums ever got the press or amount of plays they deserved and still deserve. Front man John Dauer's vocals are incredible and the guitar ans songwriting abilities of Jim Bilus create amazing sounds. And bassist Mark Stolze and drummer Jason Young tie this band together and keep the music going strong. I am seriously amazed this band has not made it mainstream yet. Though, I enjoy that because their songs don't get overplayed, they deserve a tremendous amount of credit for creating such good sounds.

Songs I recommend:
Beautiful is Gone
Swallow You
I Can't Stop
The Sweetness
Collide
Crazy Girl

Wild Sweet Orange

Ok so this band has a little bit of everything and a lotta bit of greatness. They have songs that are mellow and slow, they have some faster tempo songs with more of an alternative rock feel, they also have a folky side to them too. You might be skeptical because for one band to put all those different sounds into one album come off as overwhelming to the point where it ruins the album, well take it from me their album We Have Cause to be Uneasy is successfully able to combine these 3 genres perfectly. I don't really have an explanation as to how, but they did and that is all that you need to know.

Now before I get to breaking down the songs for you I really wanted to point this out. While listening to this band's songs read the lyrics along with it. Of all the bands I listen to (770 artists on iTunes currently) this band is in the top 10 for lyrics. Seriously they are great and easy to relate to.

Now the part you all want to read. Normally right here I would just list songs that I think would hook you onto this band. Well because of the band's broad genre I am going to break it down into 3 separate lists based on the style of the song.

Indie (slow/mellow)
Ten Dead Dogs
Seeing and Believing
Sour Milk
Land of No Return

Alternative Rock
Tilt
Either/Or
House of Regret

Folk
An Atlas to Follow
Aretha's Gold
Sour Milk
Night Terrors

Crickets - I couldn't decide which category to put this under.
